With The Ryder Cup getting closer each day, golf is riding high in Wales and we, with our partner organisations, aim to make it even better. Across the country you'll find a welcoming, enthusiastic attitude and an infrastructure that's designed to encourage everyone to get started in this absorbing, healthy sport - especially women and children.

Wales is firmly committed to developing women-friendly golf. It's no coincidence that we host one of the biggest tournaments on the Ladies European Tour. But beyond the 'leading ladies' you'll find a buzzing women's golf tutoring scene with dedicated sessions for beginners and seasoned players alike.

Golf Development Wales - as one of our partner organisations -is striving to increase the numbers playing the game in Wales. Based at the Golf Union of Wales' offices, its top priority is on welcoming youngsters and women into the game. Programmes up and running include the free Women and Girls Beginner Coaching scheme.Golf is also part of the Sports Council for Wales’ Dragon Sport programme which introduces the game to primary school children through fun sessions and after-school clubs.

At the heart of our campaign to get everyone into golf is a beautifully simple truth; Wales is a brilliant place to play. Wherever you go, you'll find excellent courses in extraordinary scenery, plentiful facilities and masses to do after you've played the last hole.

"People often think they are priced out of the game and that they cannot afford to play. It's our job to increase low-cost opportunities but also to promote the fact that cost is not really a barrier to the novice. The average cost for junior membership in Wales is only £65 a year - that's £1.25 a week!"

Hannah Davies, Director of Golf Development Wales

"Apart from being huge fun, golf is really good for you. It's a 'lifelong' sport that you can play at any age, in the fresh air on one of nearly 200 Welsh courses"
